And now to Part Deux: The Women! Without further ado, let\u2019s dive right in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
FEMALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The nominees are Emma Stone, Bugonia<\/em>, Rose Byrne, If I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You<\/em>, Jessie Buckley, Hamnet<\/em>, Chase Infiniti, One Battle After Another <\/em>and Kate Hudson, Song Sung Blue<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Four of these five actresses also earned Oscar nods, with only Chase Infiniti on the outs, thanks to the Academy\u2019s recognition of Sentimental Value<\/em>\u2019s Renate Reinsve and her phenomenal work in one of my favorite films of the year (though, full disclosure, she and director Joachim Trier had me with their previous effort, The Worst Person in the World<\/em>, one of the best films of the 21st century so far), but of course I don\u2019t actually think any of that matters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n I suppose there\u2019s a chance that Byrne pulls an upset, but I\u2019m starting to think that Buckley\u2019s march to an Oscar is inevitable, and this will be just another step along the way. Not that she won\u2019t deserve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n WHO SHOULD WIN: Jessie Buckley<\/p>\n\n\n\n WHO WILL WIN: Jessie Buckley<\/p>\n\n\n\n FEMALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The nominees are Amy Madigan, Weapons<\/em>, Teyana Taylor, One Battle After Another<\/em>, Ariana Grande, Wicked: For Good<\/em>, Odessa A\u2019zion, Marty Supreme <\/em>and Wunmi Mosaku, Sinners<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This one is far more interesting, especially with the recent rise of Taylor as a serious contender. I have thought, since seeing Weapons<\/em> in the theater \u2014 an increasing rarity for someone with a toddler \u2014 that Madigan was going to take the Oscar for her spectacular work in the film, and it wouldn\u2019t be close. I still think she\u2019ll win that award, though I no longer believe it\u2019s the sure thing I once did. Still, for this category, where only actors vote, I think that as tremendous as Taylor is in her limited time on screen (she basically disappears after the movie\u2019s first 40 minutes or so), SAG-AFTRA members do enjoy recognizing longtime working actors who have been at it for decades, like Madigan. That\u2019s why I\u2019m picking her here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n WHO SHOULD WIN: Amy Madigan<\/p>\n\n\n\n WHO WILL WIN: Amy Madigan<\/p>\n\n\n\n FEMALE ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The nominees are Keri Russell, The Diplomat<\/em>, Rhea Seehorn, Pluribus<\/em>, Britt Lower, Severance<\/em>, and Parker Posey and Aimee Lou Wood, The White Lotus<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In a different year, I would lean toward Lower, who won the Emmy for this category back in September. I might even consider one of the other three, but this is Rhea Seehorn\u2019s time now. She won the Golden Globe, she\u2019ll win this, and she\u2019ll win the Emmy in six months. Easiest choice of this bunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n WHO SHOULD WIN: Rhea Seehorn<\/p>\n\n\n\n WHO WILL WIN: Rhea Seehorn<\/p>\n\n\n\n FEMALE ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The nominees are Jean Smart, Hacks<\/em>, Jenna Ortega, Wednesday<\/em>, Kristen Wiig, Palm Royale<\/em>, and Catherine O\u2019Hara and Kathryn Hahn, The Studio<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Since Hacks<\/em> first premiered in 2020, Jean Smart has been eligible for this award four times in five years. She has won each of the previous three times, and there is no reason to believe she won\u2019t win a fourth. Especially since neither The Bear<\/em>\u2019s Ayo Edebiri nor Abbott Elementary<\/em>\u2019s Quinta Brunson are nominated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n WHO SHOULD WIN: Jean Smart<\/p>\n\n\n\n WHO WILL WIN: Jean Smart<\/p>\n\n\n\n FEMALE ACTOR IN A TELEVISION MOVIE OR LIMITED SERIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The nominees are Claire Danes, The Beast in Me<\/em>, Michelle Williams, Dying For Sex<\/em>, Sarah Snook, All Her Fault<\/em>, and Christine Tremarco and Erin Doherty, Adolescence<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is the most painful one of the bunch for me, because, as I said in my Golden Globes predictions, Michelle Williams gave my favorite performance of any woman on TV last year. Two of my other favorites were Tremarco and Doherty in Adolescence<\/em>, and because these two competed in the Supporting Actress categories at the Emmys and Globes, they were never in direct competition with Williams. Now, it\u2019s all one category, which is only frustrating for me because I have to make a choice, as Doherty\u2019s performance is probably my second favorite from a female actor last year. The year of Adolescence<\/em> comes to a close at this ceremony, and just as I expect Owen Cooper to win the male counterpart of this award, I will be beyond shocked if Doherty doesn\u2019t take this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n WHO SHOULD WIN: Michelle Williams<\/p>\n\n\n\n WHO WILL WIN: Erin Doherty<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" And now to Part Deux: The Women!
